- “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” (TIES, 1990) That is the official definition of Ecotourism. More and more Tourism companies tend to use this concept to tackle environmental and social issues while allowing people to travel in harmony with nature.

Ecuador is a good example of these countries that decided to develop Ecotourism. The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve (Reserva de Producción Faunística Cuyabeno) is well-known to be one of the sites with the highest biodiversity in the world. Located in Northeastern Ecuador, that is an amazing area of Amazonia in which more than 550 bird species, 350 fish species, 12 0000 different plants and many other animal or plant species have been identified.

Ecotourism is a way to tackle social and environmental issues in this area, while offering sustainable income to the different indigenous families that inhabit the area (Cofans, Sionas, Secoyas, etc.) in addition to the fact that is a great opportunity for tourists who are not generally used to see this kind of landscapes.

A few ecolodges settled in this area. That is the case of Tapir Lodge, which is 100% eco-friendly and works with the solar energy. There are 16 rooms in the lodge, all equipped with mosquito nets and comfortable beds.

The hosts can enjoy luscious Amazonian food thanks to the local cook, and nights are incredibly peaceful thanks to the environment that allows our hosts to sleep with the magic sounds of the Amazonia rainforest.

With a great taste of adventure, outdoor activities are provided which are always outstanding memories for the clients: canoe on the “Rio Cuyabeno”, rainforest treks, sunset on the Laguna Grande (a lake in Amazonia which has a unique vegetation), activities provided by the local indigenous families which allow the clients to have a better understanding of their culture and traditions, etc.
