US issues property waiver to Nicaragua

Nicaragua (AP) A U.S. official says Washington has renewed Nicaragua’s property waiver for another year.

The action will prevent Washington from lobbying against Nicaragua when the Central American country applies for loans with international financial institutions.

In exchange, Nicaragua commits to continue solving property claims by U.S. citizens whose real estate was confiscated by the Sandinista government between 1979 and 1990.

U.S. Embassy spokesman in Nicaragua Thomas Hann confirmed Friday that the waiver has been renewed.

Nicaragua has settled more than 2,000 property claims by U.S. citizens in the last 20 years.

The property waiver’s approval was in doubt after Washington refused this year to renew Nicaragua’s tax transparency waiver denying it U.S. assistance in some police and education programs.
